Starting a Composition
Drawing and paint mediums for this class (oils, acrylics, soft or oil pastels)
Saturday, February 20th, 9:30 – 3:30
Tuition $75, add $10 if using classroom materials, otherwise a materials list will be provided.
“Planning the understructure of light and dark shapes at the beginning of each painting is the artist's most important job.” We will focus on setting up a still life, how to plan your painting using quick sketches, composition decision making, what tools you need to be efficient in your studio, and how to get started with a painting. Defining light and dark shapes on canvas, participants will come away with a good plan for a painting. This is vital practice for all genres of painting, from landscape, still life, portraiture to abstract painting.
Painting with Color
Drawing and paint mediums for this class (oils, acrylics, soft or oil pastels)
Saturday, Mar 6th, 9:30 – 3:30
Tuition $75, add $10 if using classroom materials(professional acrylics), otherwise a materials list will be provided.
“Pure draughtsmen are philosophers and dialecticians. Colourists are epic poets.” (Charles Baudelaire) We will focus on color and placement to achieve illusion of depth and mystery. Participants will make color selections for the objects they choose to paint, and decisions about background and layering of paint to create luminosity. Bring three beautiful objects, some cloth or choose from the still life objects in the studio to begin a painting with a focused plan with color.
Issues with Composition
Saturday, Mar 27th, 9:30 – 3:30
Tuition $75, bring your paintings and materials.
“Even when there is an overall plan, an artist may still get a better idea of his or her intention as the process unfolds.” Even with meticulous planning, decision making continues as long as you work on a painting. We will work toward developing new plans with composition and color choices as you complete paintings. Be prepared to make changes in method and direction in this class. We will begin the class with a focused study of what makes a successful composition, by looking at paintings and engaging in group discussion. Then we will analyze your works in progress, and focus on new strategies for successful completion, from editing to harmonious color combinations. Bring two or three pieces of your artwork that are in need of some improvement.
